Project ACTIVE 2.0 Supports Indonesia’s Efforts to Improve Cervical Cancer Treatment

24.09.2025 - Press release

Jakarta, September 24, 2025 — A landmark partnership to improve cervical cancer treatment nationwide has been established between the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation (BMZ), the German Embassy in Jakarta, and prominent Indonesian hospitals. As part of Kerjasama Indonesia–Jerman (Indonesia–Germany cooperation), the bilateral partnership launched Project ACTIVE 2.0(Enhancing Cervical Cancer Treatment & Patient Recovery Across Southeast Asia) to strengthen radiotherapy techniques in hospitals across Indonesia, to improve patient outcomes, and to contribute to a more effective cancer care system. The program is supported by Deutsche Investitions-und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG) Impulse, Elekta, The Federation of Asian Organizations for Radiation Oncology (FARO), and facilitated by Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST).

Four leading medical institutions in Indonesia — Rumah Sakit Kanker Dharmais Hospital, Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Sardjito General Hospital, and Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital— have joined Project ACTIVE 2.0 as Centers of Excellence (CoE). Under a three-year cooperation sponsored by DEG Impulse and Elekta, these hospitals will serve as hubs for training, infrastructure development, and patient recovery support, ensuring long-term improvements in cancer care.

As training centers, the four hospitals will provide training for hospitals in their surrounding areas. In addition, they will establish training centers equipped with advanced facilities to enhance the capabilities of healthcare professionals in cancer care.
Cervical cancer is one of the most significant health challenges in Indonesia, with approximately 36,000 new cases diagnosed annually and 23 women per 100,000 affected by the disease . Through ACTIVE 2.0, hospitals will gain access to advanced radiotherapy practices, international expertise, and tailored training programs to deliver better care to patients nationwide.

“The Ministry of Health welcomes this initiative as part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen cancer care in Indonesia,” said Director of General for Medical Device and Pharmacy Ministry of Health, Dr. Dra. Lucia Rizka Andalusia Apt., M. Pharm., MARS. “This collaboration supports our shared vision of developing oncology infrastructure and professional capacity in national hospitals.”

“On behalf of the German Federal Government, we are proud to contribute to a joint initiative that strengthens healthcare systems in Indonesia through long-term partnerships and knowledge sharing,” said Benjamin Knödler, Head of Cooperation with the Private Sector at the BMZ. “ACTIVE 2.0 demonstrates the value of working together to build resilient and high-quality cancer care across the region.”

“ACTIVE 2.0 aims to support hospitals in providing higher quality care through training, infrastructure, and long-term planning,” said Paul Lee, Project Director of ACTIVE 2.0. “We are proud to contribute to the advancement of radiotherapy technology in Indonesia in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Indonesian hospitals.”

International medical experts, including radiation oncologists from Japan and Europe, will provide guidance under the coordination of the international partners. Training schedules with Indonesian hospitals will be developed in coordination with medical institutions, ensuring that local professionals gain access to global best practices in cervical cancer treatment.

The initiative is carried out in partnership with the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the BMZ, and the German Embassy in Jakarta, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and improving patient outcomes.
